What do you need to de-gauss? Maybe you have a monitor which is too badly magnetized for the in-built coil to hack it.
I have got around this by stripping the coil out of a scrap monitor (goes around the tube just behind the bezel) The trick is to energize the coil with it away from the monitor, move it quickly up to it and back away again before switching off. Do this in a max. 5 seconds or the coil will overheat! You can repeat this working around the monitor frame, allowing the coil to cool before each run. Never leave it energized for more than a few seconds.
