Material for CP & Cab??

Im about to build my first cp and later on a cabinet.

I now need advice on what type of "wood" to use. Since Im gonna have the cab in a room I share with my girlfriend it gotta have pretty high WAF factor, and it doesnt hurt if its reasonable affordable either.

Im thinking of MDF but Im not sure what kind of finnish I can get on that with some sort o paint or something.

Any advice or links to sites where I can see some examples would be nice.
