After your computer is done booting up, Press Ctrl-Alt-Del and look at the list of crap loaded. Assuming you want true bare bones, you really only need SysTray and Explorer. Load "msconfig.exe " and check out the list of bootup programs, then uncheck everything but those two above.

You also do not want anything in your "startup" folder under Start>Programs>Startup, nor do you want anything in the little box with the clock, except the clock!

Run "sysedit.exe" and make sure your autoexec.bat and config.sys files don't have any outdated/unnecessary drivers. Neither really needs anything at all, although you might want to leave himem and emm386 command parameters in your config.sys... You only need drivers in those files if you're running DOS programs.

In your BIOS, turn OFF the memory check and floppy drive seek...
