(be able to play pc games and stuff) -- but every time i open the spare parts closet and see that thing in there i want to figgure out something to do with it ;-)

Changing the pixel size does use more cpu time but if you have a good system you shouldn't see any slow down. Most likely the monitor supports only 1 refresh rate as well. I would vote for trying to use it if it is cheap enough (free is a good price...).
