Need help with optical rotary joysticks and opti-pac

Ive finally decided that I will go with the happcontrols optical rotary joystick and i-pac, opti-pac solution.

How do I get the rotary joystick to work with my games.
Do I just connect them to the opti-pac and then to the computer and change a setting in mame or something? Or do I have to connect the opti-pac to the i-pac???

Im totally lost here so any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.
