My main computer is a p233mmx laptop and plays Pac-Man era games well. If you're willing to give up sound, a lot of games are playable. It also has a TV out and a gameport. I use the Gravis 4-button pad-but it has configuration problems in some emus/games. I can also run Gens, the Genesis emu, close to full speed.

: I have 2 data points, and an observation that may help you:

: HP laptop with 600mhz p3 runs things really well up to the mid 80's, and some stuff that's even later. The built in sound has problems breaking up, but pausing and unpausing fixes that.

: 200mhz mmx pentium. plays most games up to early 80 well. gauntlet plays with major hesitation.

: the tricky part of using a laptop is going to be the controls. the HP i mentioned, has a PS/2 kbd/mouse, and a serial port, but no joystick port. be sure to look at the ports before deciding on a model.
