The plate doesn't mount directly against the ball, there is a plastic ring on the housing the plate mounts over. This gets squeezed by the plate and restricts the ball. Moving it up doesn't help. He really should try scraping the inside of the plate. This worked for me.

: take a sheet of thick paper, and cut it to the same size as the bezel, and put it between the bezel and the trackball. you might need a couple sheets, but based on the exploded drawins on the Happ site, i think if you put some space between the ball and the bezel it would free it up. (because the cross section of the ball will get smaller the lower it is mounted.
