In Reply to: May get a vertical 19" monitor with cabinet this weekend but nervous about hooking it up to a computer. Is this something that only pros should do or is it as easy for a newbie to understand? posted by rurdy4me on 18, 2001 at 12:50 PM:

A couple things you need to be aware of first....

1) A VGA signal will damage or ruin your monitor. Therefore, you need a front end like ArcadeOS to load up and BEFORE your arcade monitor is turned on. To do this, just set up ArcadeOS on a regular VGA monitor, configure it and test it. It will emit beeps when the signal is safe to let you know you can turn on the arcade monitor. You willalso need to build an interface to connect the monitor to your video card.

2) And MOST IMPORTANTLY...monitors can carry potentially lethal voltages for long periods od time and need to be properly discharged before working on them.

Read everything you can on this topic before you start soldering, plugging, powering, etc. Proper planning and research will make your project successful.

Good Luck!
