Thanks for the excellent write-up.

I don't understand the difference between the two. can you help?

: The big problem with using the mouse port(and driver) for a spinner is acceleration. For example, if you take your mouse, and move it 1 inch accross your mouse pad very slowly it won't go very far on screen, but if you move it the same 1 inch very quickly it will shoot the pointer all the way across the screen.

: This effect makes the mouse easier to use for controling windows apps, but really screws up something like arkanoid, where fast, precise position control is essential.

: Turning off acceleration, or setting the pointer speed to minimum, minimizes this effect. Then you can adjust the sensitivity in mame untill it feels like the real machine.

: I run windows, so for arkanoid I use mame32.
: I set the Pointer Speed in the mouse control panel all the way to slow, and then adjust the sensitivity in MAME until I get the right feel.
: If you run DOS you need to find a mouse driver that will let you turn off mouse acceleration.
: I use MAME32 for all games where this is an issue because the Pointer Speed setting in the mouse control panel does not seem to change the behavior in DOS mame running under win98.

: When I first did this I went to an arcade and played arkanoid for a few hours so the right feel was fresh in mind.

: btw, I use an arkanoid spinner from happ hacked to a mouse interface.

: : I have a Spinner made from a hacked, standard Microsoft Mouse and I was wondering what you guy's with similar setup's were using for the speed and sensitivity in MAME ? Especially with Arkanoid.

: : Thanks...
