I think EmuMannen has a program called "SortList" which extracts that information from Mame. I used it once, but couldn't get it to work again... :-? Maybe my brain is fried.
By the way, if you want badly enough to control all your favorite games, then make several swap panels with suitable controller sets! I would only question the use of a top-fire stick; most of the ones I've seen and tried kinda suck. They DON'T feel at all like the Wico Red Ball sticks that used to be available for Atari/Commodore. I'd try a trigger-grip stick instead... probably a hacked one rather than the very expensive ones sold by Happ.
