The PS2 port was first designed and relased on the PS/2 (personal system 2) by IBM. That is where it got it's name.

The earliest model PS/2 (computer) I have access to is a 386 SX16 produced in around 1992 give or take a few years. Since that is the oldest PS/2 I have ever seen or know of I would have to conclude that the PS2 keyboard/mouse plug dates back to that machines date of manufacture.

Over the years "PS/2" has been bastardised to "ps2" and that is what we all use today, despite the fact that they are not made by IBM or in the back of a personal system 2.

Facinating fact: on the origonal IBM machines there was no distinction between keyboard and mouse, you could plug either into either port and they would work fine, you could plug in two mice and they would both work fine.

Another facinating fact: an IBM PS/2 (computer) will not boot without a keyboard plugged in

and you think your girlfriend looks at you funny?
