First off, there are two kinds:
Optical rotaries - connect like a spinner to an opti-pac + for rotation and to an I-Pac for movement. They don't click when you turn them.
Mechanical rotaries - connect through Druin's interface (See the marketplace board here) to an I-pac. They do click but have detents at 12 positions.
More or less a matter of cost and preference which you go with.
