It's probably totally up to you based on what kind of gaming you plan on doing, if you're not going to do a lot of Street Fighter/Mortal Kombat type games, you might not want a 6 button per player deal.

That being said, I went with a slightly hybrid solution. I extended the top of my CP, but it's really only to allow for more wrist space, the last 2 inches or so can't hold any controls.

I started out with the basic SFII layout using 2 sticks/6 buttons each, Player 1 and player 2 starts at the top of the panel.

Then I added a 4 way stick that mirrors the P1 stick. The buttons are the P1 and P2 buttons 7 and 8 so that if I ever run into a goofy layout that needs more than 6 buttons I am covered. This area with the 4 way could be used to hold a spinner or small trackball instead of a stick.

Everything is wired to an I-Pac so I can use shift keys without extra buttons, you can also map combo keys in MAME for stuff like game resets (player 1 and 2 buttons 1-3 at the same time.) I did mount coin 1 and coin 2 buttons on the front of my panel as well, but if you need the space, it's pretty easy to move the start buttons down there.

That's clear as mud I'm sure, so there's a picture here: http://www.angelfire.com/80s/mame/images/mini/cpart.jpg

: Okay, I have an Final Fight cabinet, so there is not alot of room. Sadly, it is a nice Final Fight cabinet with all the artwork which is about to be converted, sorry Saint.
: Anyway, what is the optimal control setup with limited space to play the most MAME games?
: 2 joysticks
: 12 buttons
: spinner?
: Mini trackball
: Has anyone extended the control panel of this type of cabinet to add more buttons/controls? Or should I go for the have multiple control panels for difference games? Also, how many maintenance buttons should I have? Thanks ahead
