: : : Just got my $4.00 trackballs. They are heavy and built to last, but....they spin less than 1/4 turn each time I rotate them (independent of the amount of effort used to spin them).
: : : I opened them up, cleaned them up, and still they roll very very little.
: : : My performance may not be indicative of the ones you get, as evidenced by some of the other messages on the board, but these are not going to find a place on my machine.
: : : John

: : Sorry to hear about that John.
: : I've found that of the six that I've recieved,
: : 4 or moving very freely, the other 2 are like
: : what you are talking about. Happ sells replacement
: : bearings, but i'm not sure if they are the same
: : as the ones in these trackballs.
: : You should be able to swap parts from one
: : trackball to another.
: : Also what model # trackball did you get?.
: : I'm very happy with mine, It is done and cut into
: : my control panel(P.I.A.).
: : Also they are hackable for spinners.
: : My mind is on other things tonight,
: : I've brought home another cabinet.
: : I don't know how she puts up with me,
: : this is not a hobby for me....its an OBESSION.
: : Thanks for your time,

o.k. Here goes,
I used the tb436-311-x1-5-1d,I would have loved to use
tbs311g1c (spins like a champ, I got 3) but they are
much harder to hack, but very hackable by cutting the
metal plate and mounting the new opics in place, I will
hack that model too. The 436 is much easier to hack
(if 2 days was easy). I bought 2 cheapo mice (or is it mouse)
from good 'ol radio shack, same brand for $9.99 ea., I took
my trusty side cutters( I call'em dikes, but I don't think
I'm allowed to say that on this board :) ) anyway, just
cut the optics out of one mouse, leaving them on the board.
Now desolder the optics from the other mouse, And solder in
5 wires in the place of the optics you removed from the
uncut mouse. Now solder the wires to the cut mouse board,
Then I took some good double face tape and mounted it to
the trackball side next to the exsisting optical wheel,
slid the wheel a hair and mounted the cut board with the
optics in place...done...I can't explain it any easier
than that...sorry. This took more thinking then anything
else. First I tried removing the optics and mounting on
the exsisting board but, getting the optics lined up
was a pain in the ass (whoops),
so buy cutting a chunk of the mouse board with the
optics in place was an easier route.
I hope that helps. It not as bad as it sounds if you
can understand my poor writing. Also, I was lucky enough
to recieve 1 larger plate about 1/2 in wider then the other
trackballs. So mounting the trackball was easy, I cut the
hole in the control panel the size of the trackball and
attached the lager plate/cover to the trackball then
slid it in place, notched about an 1/8 of the control
panel so the cover would sit flush. It does'nt spin as fast
as the tbs311g1c, but works pretty good.
Thanks for your time, I'll post pics as soon as I revamp
my page,
Jerky
