Switchable 8/4-way stick...

Does anyone here know of an example of someone creating a switchable joystick that can go from 4-way to 8-way without opening the panel and changing the washer thingy on the bottom of the stick?

Some kind of mechanical switch or something on the surface of the panel that does the switching?
