I can press buttons 1,2,3,4,5,7 or 1,2,3,4,6,8 simultaneously (I can also work the directional at the same time). I'm going to re-wire 1,2,3,4,5,7 to the "action" buttons that are in a 2X3 arrangement on the controller (like Street Fighter). Buttons 6,8 will be the coin and start buttons. This means I'll be swapping 2 buttons in my configuration -- right now I can't press the upper right two buttons at the same time.

The Saitek driver that I downloaded even allows button remapping, so I could use the remapping to swap buttons 6 and 7 when I'm done. The layout would wind up being:

7 8
4 5 6
1 2 3

This gamepad hack is good enough for what I set out to do. I wanted a controller for most of the MAME games and the console emulators. This gamepad hack let me have an 8-way joystick, 6 buttons (2X3), and 2 utility buttons (start, coin). I already have a Hotrod SE. I'm going to make a another controller using the same type of CompUSA 8-button gamepad hack (for a total of 2 gamepad hacks). I'm giving one to my brother and the other to my nephew.
