: I have two AC ~5" cooling fans at the top of my cabinet to keep the TV from melting, wired directly to an old power cord. They are really loud, in fact I disconnected one of them to try to keep the sound down.

: Any ideas on this? They're screwed onto the underside of the wood (5/8" particleboard), with a grill on the topside. The rotation is fine (sucking air out of the cabinet), the airflow isn't blocked (plenty of holes in the cab, and still noisy even with the doors open), but they have a loud whine. Not really high-pitched -- think computer power supply fan but much louder.

That's typical of AC cooling fans. I had a couple of them, too. When I couldn't stand the noise any more, I pulled them out and put in DC fans. Not quite the same CFM, but much quieter.
