Installing a Happ 3.5” Trackball question?

I have just bought a Happ 3.5” Trackball. This came with a face plate – this is a square metal plate that’s about 2mm thick.

If I want to install the trackball onto a ¾’ thick wood control panel, how is the trackball face plate installed in?

Does a grove need to be cut out of the control panel that is the size of face plate down to a depth of 2mm (thickness of the plate)?

If so, how is the grove cut out (ie what equipment, tools are used).

OR

Is the Face plate installed on top of the panel, so that it sticks out above the panel by 2mm.

Look forward to anyone’s feedback that has installed a Happ track ball with the face plate. Your help would be appreciated.
