4-way vs. 8-way

I read alot of posts with people asking about switching their 8-way stick to 4-way for Donkey Kong etc. Is it really that much of a pain to play a 4-way game on an 8-way stick? You're basically doing the same thing with your 8-way game pad and it doesn't bother me...

Also, there are only 4 switches regardless of the stick type, the only "conversion" is just a piece of plastic on the base of the stick that prevents diagonal movement, right?

I just want a stick setup (8-way) that will work fine with everything. I don't want to go opening my controller up every time I play Donkey Kong etc.
