MAME and MESS question

Sorry about this....I know this isnt exactly the right place for this topic but I am having troubles getting an answer for this.

I have got a new PC recently and have had to reinstalled both MAME and MESS. Both games give me the same
sound problem. When I start the game there is a steady ticking sound. The game sound can be heard in the
background but the ticking pretty much drowns it out. I have tried this with the newest versions of each emulator
and through straight dos and with frontends all with the same results.

I am using a P3-450mhz Hewlett Packard with a Riptide' sound card.

Any ideas?

After all this time building controls for other people I am finally about finished with my own MAME cab and now it does not work right!!! :-(
