I had the same problem for a slight duration as well (I can't believe you put up with it for two months) I did a couple of things so I can't pinpoint specifically which fixed the problem but the most important thing is to make absolute sure that you are using the latest AGP drivers for your motherboard's chipset, and the very latest drivers from ATi for the card. I believe I had the hardware acceleration set to max, and the refresh rate set to the adaptor default.
