I'm doing much the same thing... I have a BookPC - integrated Intel810 chipset for video, soundoutput etc.
For controls, I'm currently using a "Ultra Impact" which lets me hook up for Playstation joypads as sidewinder compatible gamepads (it uses the gameport). My longterm aim is to build 'real controls' but that's longterm!
Biggest problem I'm having is a front end - I need to use some windows programs & I can't find a suitable app that 'looks' right /and/ works with the joypad etc.
