The skipping or strobing also happens with not so cheap PC trackballs. I have a Logitech optical (not opto-mechanical) trackball and the same thing happens when you spin the ball really fast. You can even see backwards tracking effect in Windows with the mouse pointer.

: Well, I've been running my Mame cab for a little while now, and after much, much tweaking it's great. Well, great except for one thing. The CompUSA trackball I put in my control panel isn't exactly living up to my expectations. Basically, any kind of fast spin on it just doesn't work. It really show in Major Havoc, because instead of running madly across the screen, the major just kind of does a little stuttering dance. So, is this something that all cheap PC trackballs do, or just mine? Is this a problem with the hardware, or do I need to make some adjustments to my DOS mouse driver (it runs off the PS2 port, and I use the ctmousep driver program from the AdvanceMAME zip). I'm tempted to buy a Happs trackball, but WOW, that's a lot of money!
