...I'll just mention it anyway. I'm in the middle of designing a MAME cabinet. And before I even ordered any of the buttons or joysticks I already had decided how the control panel should look like. Because I went to the web site where I later bought the stuff and found all the dimensions and mounting info. And then I just drew them in a CAD program and printed them. I then made paper cut-outs and had an paper model to test design ideas with... It worked really well. (Check the URL if you want to use my drawings (PDF files))
