Try turning on Scanlines in your emulator. This helps a lot. This is why Nicola put it in MAME in the first place!

: So, I lucked my way into a fairly nice 21" PC monitor for my MAME cab. Snagged it from a NASA surplus auction cheap, and it works pretty well. Has some fuzziness in the top right corner at high resolutions, so I don't care to use it for normal PC use, therefore it's going in the cab. What I was wondering is does anybody know anything I can use to soften the picture? Things look pretty good with scanlines, but it's still kind of harsh on the eyes. Way more noticeable than it was on my 17", and now I understand why everybody is going for D9200s and such. Still, I want to play PC games on it too, so the PC monitor is still the best option for me. And the vector games look fantastic at really high resolution!

: I was just wondering if there are any clever ways to make a nice, big, sharp monitor look cheap and fuzzy. I've got an ATI Xpert@Play 98 vid card. Maybe drivers that do interpolation? Other video cards that can? Special versions of MAME?

: I think I'm looking for something along the lines of the interpolation modes that NeoRageX can do. Those look pretty good, and they're fast. Any thoughts?
