Actually, there probably is, but you need to be very careful if you try this. There's more than enough voltage inside a monitor to kill you twice.

That being said, usually inside a monitor you will find a focus control. Most of the time it is on the flyback, right next to the high voltage control. Don't mess with the high voltage control, unless you want to shorten the life of your CRT and probably dose yourself with less than safe levels of radiation while you are playing.

You can tweak the focus control to de-focus the screen image. This shouldn't hurt the monitor, and will screw up your crisp image quite nicely.

You might want to get the help of someone who knows what they're looking for if you aren't comfortable doing this yourself.

: So, I lucked my way into a fairly nice 21" PC monitor for my MAME cab. Snagged it from a NASA surplus auction cheap, and it works pretty well. Has some fuzziness in the top right corner at high resolutions, so I don't care to use it for normal PC use, therefore it's going in the cab. What I was wondering is does anybody know anything I can use to soften the picture? Things look pretty good with scanlines, but it's still kind of harsh on the eyes. Way more noticeable than it was on my 17", and now I understand why everybody is going for D9200s and such. Still, I want to play PC games on it too, so the PC monitor is still the best option for me. And the vector games look fantastic at really high resolution!

: I was just wondering if there are any clever ways to make a nice, big, sharp monitor look cheap and fuzzy. I've got an ATI Xpert@Play 98 vid card. Maybe drivers that do interpolation? Other video cards that can? Special versions of MAME?

: I think I'm looking for something along the lines of the interpolation modes that NeoRageX can do. Those look pretty good, and they're fast. Any thoughts?
