Using a parellel port instead of an encoder for a controller(more inside)

Now I am a builder. I could whip a cab in an hour or so. but this programing stuff I am new at so... i was told that to hook up a nes or sega controller to my pc i should use a 25- pin connector or parellel port. arent they the same?? but any ways how would i go about donig this and do I need to write a program to read or understand the commands??
