No iron needed. Just get some crimp style connectors (Pep Boys, WalMart Electrical, Radio Shack), a wire stripper/crimping tool and some wire. I used 18 Gauge wire (which is overkill) and it was pretty easy. Don't know why the HotRodSE encoder would be considered 'better' as it's not programmable and doesn't work on certain motherboards. I've used both and don't notice a difference with regards to responsiveness, etc.
If you go down this path, let me know and I'll send you some pictures as my panel layout is similar to the HotRodSE and will give you a good starting point.
