The spacer is cut to about 1/8" tall, removing about 3/8" off the top. Plus, the wood is routed so that it's about 3/8" thick. So that's 3/4" gained, which is barely enough, but it makes up for the 3/4" thick wood.

If you look at the 4-way picture (link below) you'll also notice I used some parts from a spare Super joystick. The short sleeve keeps the stick from just falling back down into the base. The red ball doesn't come with a sleeve--it has a groove cut in the middle of the shaft and uses a circlip instead.

So, my point is, if you cut the spacer to raise up the stick, you'll need some way to KEEP it up (Viagra probably won't work here). The spacer I took from a Super joystick does that, OR, you can cut another groove in the shaft lower than the original one and use the circlip.
