Hi Brian,
The best way to tell picture quality... is to look at fine details and lines. On poor monitors... you will see that what should be a nice crisp sharp line... will be too blurry, and slightly glowing (sometimes color bleeding into the next). Look at things like the games fonts, and small details.
Some games, like the fighting games... are all thick lines, so you will not notice this. Try games with higher resolution like SuperSprint...
As for the arcade monitor seeming simular, it may need adjusting, or cleaning! A lot of people dont realize it, but a 1mm coating of dust is behing the glass. Its see-thru... but you will lose a lot of clarity looking thru it ! :)
But... if you are happy with it, that all that matters right? :)
