I agree w/ bob. I used the spade bit on a drill press to make my control panel and it cut through like butter and was gravy to use, however with a hand drill the spade bit is a little harder to keep a straight hole. I used the hole saw the other day and that seemed pretty easy to keep a straight hole with the hand drill. It did take longer to make the holes though, but it worked.

: as magnet eye pointed out, 1 1/8" is correct size. for $3.99 you get a spade bit, which i always find a pita to use with a handheld drill. for about $8 you can get a hole saw, which will make holes with a bit less effort. if you have a drill press, then spade bits are perfect.

: no matter which type you use, drill from the top only until the bit breaks through, and then flip the work over and drill from the bottom. that will prevent the wood from splintering.
