Customized N64 controller

Hello,

I am trying to make a customized controller for the N64 system.

My brother is handicapped and finds it hard to use the standard controller for the N64 because of it's weight and bulk. I'd like to remove the analog stick, C buttons, L/R buttons and trigger from the N64 controller and repackage it in the shell of a standard NES controller. (A smaller squarish controller from the old 8 bit system) This would leave only the Direction pad, A/B buttons and the start button which is all of the functionality he needs to play "Dr. Mario 64".

I have ruined two controllers trying to do this myself. Does anyone want to try this sort of thing? I'd be happy to pay for labor/parts/etc...

I'm pretty much stuck so any leads would be great as well.
