Use a scrap piece of wood and try diff size holes.
As long as the stick has full movment (it hits the end stop before it hits the top of the hole in the wood) it is fine. No need for a larger hole.
In fact, you want to get by with the smallest hole that you can get away with, so you have added structural support around the stick.

I have a 3/4" plywood control panel, and the 1 1/8" hole is 'just right'. Allows full movement, and the black dust-cover disc doesnt reveal the hole when the stick is moved.
