...Suck! The only solution I've found is to play AdvanceMAME ( the controls are fixed in this version of MAME ) or Sinistar on the "Williams Classics" CD. I've complained about the lack of a working Sinistar controller driver to the MAMEtester board but they haven't implemented a fix yet.

: In a recent toying with my Saitek CYBORG2000 analog stick, I was trying out Sinistar. I noticed that it is nearly impossible to play now.
: I remembered that at one time, the controls were a lot less sensative, and it was perfect. Now its too fast, and Im unable to manuver at low speeds - because it accellerates too quickly. I set the rate to 1 with 5%
: sensativity!

: I realized that there are 2 factors working here...

: The first is Emulation related... as the controls reading / speed can be determined by the emu programmer. Also, windows and different joys
: may have different reactions.

: The second, 'a REVELATION' that occured to me... The original Sinistar stick used a rubber centering 'spider'. It was like four mini bungees
: that pulled the stick back to the center.

: Realizing this, I analized my controller. It seemes that its hardest to get OUT of the center.. but once its out, it can move very smoothly.
: (resulting in loss of control - too slippery)

: I remember that the Sinistar joy was tough to move from the middle to the edge. In fact... it got harder to move the further you got twords the edges.

: This is why it was easier to say at lower speeds - to maintain to ability to change directions quickly and retrieve the evasive crystals.
: Because it too a lot of force to get good speed up.

: oooh - and one other thing I almost forgot, The Sinjoy was short and required a lot less motion from left to right. This makes turning arround
: a bit faster... where as a 7inch stick will have to be bent much farther to get the same results, thus your reaction time will be greatly reduced :(

: Unfortunately, since the Mame team usually tries to emulate the games to perfection... you will never have great control unless you build a simular return mechinism... or... if they can realize this... and add the option to slow down the accelleration. (by being at speed 1 the first 70% of the circle, speed 2 at 80% and full speed at 100% ((The original only had 3 speed levels)

:
: Hmm - even more thinking leads to another dillemma.

: Just playing Spy huner... I noticed that if I used the Y axis to control speed... I was unable to control the car at lower speeds with hi gear.

: I realized that a large factor here is the Ratio of the pot.

: In a pedal assembly - you have the ability to use gears. The gears can make the Pots turn much more than if they were directly connected. This gives more 'values' in which you are able to play with. The more values, the more control. This is why its
: easier to fly with a flightstick than those horrible analog thumb controllers.

: The steering, however, seemd to be just fine (finally fixed it :) Still, the original used gears as well... giving more degree value to the turns.

: I think there needs to be an option for drastically reducing or increasing the speeds. Currently... the controls only work well for certain games... and with certain controllers.

: IE - Spinner is almost too slow - even at top speed settings. (because arkanoid used a geared spinner)

: The tab menu needs an 'Extreme' setting function,
: alowing lower values than zero for minimum... and higher values than 255... or just make each 'step' value higher (for both value scales)
