Here's how I finished my cab, and I'm very pleased with the results:

I first applied two coats of Behr Interior Enamel Undercoater primer, which I had tinted dark. I then applied 2 -3 coats of Behr Interior/Exterior Hi-Gloss black ("lamp black", to be precise) paint. I then coated that with three coats of Mixwax Fast-Drying Polyurethane Clear Gloss to give it a nice shell.

The Minwax polyurethane was in a black and silver can. It also says "Great for floors!" in a little circle toward the bottom. There was a kind of polyurethane that said in small print on the side "DO NOT USE ON PAINTED SURFACES", but this one does not bear that warning. It does say that "slight ambering" may occur with light-colored wood surfaces, but it turned out great on the black surface. No discoloration at all, just a nice hard shiny shell.

By the way, take the "Fast-Drying" title with a grain of salt. I waited at least a day between coats to make sure that it wasn't still tacky.

Oh yeah, it wasn't the spray kind, it was the brush kind. I'd recommend it.

Hope this helps!

-John
