Weird DOS 7 problem

OK, here's a strange one. I'm running DOS 7 (ripped from Win98) and am trying to tweak the video modes for AdvanceMAME using mv.exe. Sooo, I load the appropriate tsr to get the video card in an arcade monitor friendly made and launch mv.exe only to find that it's running in VGA mode and the menu is unreadable. Now, here's the strange part... the same set-up runs fine if I use DOS 6.22.
I'd prefer to use DOS 7 since I want to use a drive larger than 2 GB, but I can't find a solution to this problem. Does anyone know why DOS 7 won't allow a video tsr to stay resident in the memory when launching an application? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Rick
