: I'm thinking about buying an old cabinet for my mame project. Is there one type of cabinet that is considered to be "the best" for a mame conversion?
If you are going to use a single large panel - you need a game that can accomodate - I suggest interchangeable panels, they look better, play better (due to less clutter) and you can make them to fit virtually any type of cab.

I've always been partial to the Galaga/Pacman-shaped cabinets, so that's what I was considering. Is this a wise choice? I found a guy locally that will sell me one for $100. Does that sound reasonable?
Yes and no - If it is in great shape, it is worth more as a restoration - galaga and pacman games fully restored usually are sold for about $1000. You should be able to get a solid cab in that style for less than $25 - You should have responded to my post a couple of weeks ago for a free nintendo cab.

: I know these are newbie questions, but I'm just trying to get started on the right foot. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Before you get too much further - do some serious thinking as to the monitor, interface, controls, etc that you want to use - the better your planning at this point, the better your final project.

Good luck - building a cab is good fun!
