In Reply to: Does anyone else think that the MAME team should concentrate less on adding more games and feaures and instead concentrate on making the already available games more perfectly emulated? (nt) posted by Jeremy Cline on 13, 2001 at 5:24 AM:

The MAME Team, is everyone who has ever written code that has been added to MAME. The 'Team' doesnt actively look for new systems and games to be added at the expence of buggy code remaining intact. They take code submissions as they come in.

If John Doe writes a driver that adds 30 new game systems to MAME, and it gets included, it is NOT the 'MAME Team' that has responcibility to fix bugs in it, it is the responcibility of John Doe.

Another member of the 'team' -might- look through the code and fix it, but it is by no means required of him as a 'team' member. In fact, Joe Blow might come along and fix John Doe's buggy code and then Joe Blow would be on the 'team'.

Just because bugs exist (and have existed for some time) does not mean they are not being worked on. If youve ever tried to debug another persons code, you know this can be a challenge best left to those with masochistic tendencies.

Many MAME Team members got their start in programming through MAME, because of some irritating bug. They decided it needed to be fixed, and they gave it a shot.

Given that all MAME work is done on a voluntary basis (ie: no pay) with no deadlines or schedules means that they owe the MAME community (users) -nothing-.

On a personal note...
I dont see what is so awesome or revolutionary about a 'final release' anyway. Finals always have some overlooked bug, but the 'team' goes right on into the next beta cycle. MAME will be in perpetual beta as long as there are unemulated games in the world. The only real diff between .36f and .37b1 is added code, and the version number.
