Question for Final Burn users

I have Final Burn in my Mame machine.
I was using a keyboard hack for the controls, and it worked great.

I recently added a joystick hack (for the player 2 controls) and now when I map Joystick Directions/Buttons in Final Burn, I get noticable slowdown. I've tried playing with all the config file settings, but can not get the game to play as smooth as it does when just keyboard keys are mapped.

Anyone else run into this bizzare occurance?
All I have to do is map ONE button off of my joystick and it slows down... My other Emus on this machine do not slow down like this. They all run great.
