Which version of MAME are you using? The VidKid guy told me (a while ago) that there was problems with the MAME implementation of Allegro, but he thought one of the variant ports like JoyMAME might work. I believe Opti-MAME superceded JoyMAME, but then I think the regular MAME eventually incorporated most of the Opti-mame things.
: I am using a Playstation Guncon gun via an LPT interface and a televsion. I can get it to track in the test program from VidKid and the trigger works but I am having a lot of trouble getting it to work well in MAME. VERY jittery and hard to control. If I make any progress I will post it here.
