I had the same problem with this stick (the MsPac/Galaga replacement, right?) and 3/4" pine.

First, for those who don't know, the "guts" are the same as a Super joystick, but with a shorter shaft with the red ball on top.

I routed a spot about about 3/8" deep (half of the board's thickness) for the joystick so that it was mounting on something 3/8" instead of 3/4". The stick was still too short.

Finally, since I have an extra Super joystick (the red ball stick replaced it) I used parts from it.
I used the red ball shaft with the shorter spacer and the round plate from the Super joystick. Then I cut the bushing that hits the microswitches so that it's only about 1/8" tall.

Result: The stick is as tall as a regular Super joystick from the panel to the bottom of the ball. Overall it's still shorter since the red ball is shorter than the teardrop Super handle. But it's now playable.

Drawbacks: I had to cannibalize a Super joystick. I still have enough parts to make it work again but this wouldn't be an option for most people. Plus, the shiny metal shaft is covered by the back plastic spacer from the Super joystick.

A better solution would have been: (1) Cut the white microswitch bushing so that it's only 1/8" tall (allowing you to move the stick up about 1/2"). (2) Cut a new slot in the shaft for the circlip that holds the shaft up so that it sits about 1/2" taller.
I just didn't feel like cutting up the shaft on the stick; that's why I used Super parts.
