Well on my computer the power button acts like a suspend/resume button when just pressed. If I hold it down (like a jumper would) it shuts off the computer in about 7 seconds. I think your idea would work to start the computer booting but the it would probably shut off again in 5-10 seconds. Another idea is some motherboards have a bios setting where pressing any key on the keyboard will turn the computer on.
