My control panels use 3/4" wood with large holes cut out for the joysticks, the sticks are mounted directly under 1/4" plexiglass. I've also tried grinding the the handles of Wico joysticks and mounting them in Happ Super bases. It works but the Wico shaft is a bit smaller in dia. than the Super so I got rid of the play by wrapping electrical tape around the shaft.
