ArcadeOS and ATI cards

I've been running my cab with a Matrox card, but decided to try an ATI Xpert 128. I've tried other ATI cards with my arcade monitor before and keep running into the same problem: the card overrides the resolution I choose in ArcadeOS. Does anyone know the secret for forcing the card to display the proper resolution? Or for that matter, does anyone have a way to make a Matrox G400 display 16 bit color (without forcing 8 bit)?
