Yup - it uses pot's... and you can easily hack a joystick for them. Also, mame accepts joy input.

As for the assembly, I made mine out of wood by Routing it like a nutshell. Made buttons by Dowels with a popsicle stick glued to the back so they didnt slide out. Trigger made by shapeing a piece of wood - then drilling a mini hole for a pivot. Used a metal pin to keep in in place.

You can try the twisty grip pvc method...although I found the design too eye-displeasing :) Also, the round thick grips were a bit odd. The worst though, was the horrible buttons that were used. Unfortunately, they arnt cheap... and tring to house a removable button on pvc is quite tricky.

As for metal... May be the best? Unfortunately, I have no access to such tooling, so I cant offer any advice there.
