VGA is technically 640x480. 800x600 and up is commonly referred to as SVGA. Med Res is just below VGA (at 24kHz) so your Dreamcast will not be able to output vga to that :-(. But you can hack your DC VGA Box to output 15kHz to work on your monitor in std res mode (this is what I've done in my NBA Jam cab).

: Hello! I've just built my first MAME cabinet and I'm having a ton of fun with it, but--the moniter just isn't cutting it. It doesn't have the arcade 'look' to it.

: I have the opportunity to purchase a 25" standard/medium resolution arcade moniter for a pretty good price. Would this be adequate to play some early-mid 90s games like X-Men, Simpsons, etc? And possibly display a Dreamcast? Would I be better off purchasing a newer SVGA compatible moniter?

: I'm totally in the dark on this subject and the compatibility issues with different games, systems, and the like. I've read a ton of websites documenting VGA to RGB cables, PC2JAMMA, etc., but I haven't found a site documenting the differences between VGA/SVGA/CGA arcade moniters. Is the difference as simple as VGA goes up to 640x200 and SVGA goes up to 1024x768 (interlaced)? If so, would a Dreamcast work on a VGA moniter?

: I know this is a lot of questions, so any help would be much appreciated.

: Thanks!
