newbie question on monitors...

Hello! I've just built my first MAME cabinet and I'm having a ton of fun with it, but--the moniter just isn't cutting it. It doesn't have the arcade 'look' to it.

I have the opportunity to purchase a 25" standard/medium resolution arcade moniter for a pretty good price. Would this be adequate to play some early-mid 90s games like X-Men, Simpsons, etc? And possibly display a Dreamcast? Would I be better off purchasing a newer SVGA compatible moniter?

I'm totally in the dark on this subject and the compatibility issues with different games, systems, and the like. I've read a ton of websites documenting VGA to RGB cables, PC2JAMMA, etc., but I haven't found a site documenting the differences between VGA/SVGA/CGA arcade moniters. Is the difference as simple as VGA goes up to 640x200 and SVGA goes up to 1024x768 (interlaced)? If so, would a Dreamcast work on a VGA moniter?

I know this is a lot of questions, so any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!
