It really does depend, IMO vector games look okay on an Arcade Monitor at 640x480 (30hz mode), all horizontal games look great on it, (except for Williams/Midway TS34010 games SmashTV, Mortal Kombat you can run them don't get me wrong, but they look pretty awful in 256colour mode and they are too narrow for 640x480 mode).

NeoGeo games and all other look great, all 16bit horizontal games (except the formentioned ones) look great also, but you'll need a special card for this, ATI Rage card (mach64 internal clock one), this includes Rage, Rage2, Rage2C, Charger, Expert series very cheap. I recommend this card for MAME Cabs.

Vertical games, this is a bit of an issue as no matter what you'll have black bars to the left and right, vertical games with a height <=256 look great, but any higher and they won't fit correctly.

I'd recommend a vertical/horizontal mounting monitor, as the only way to experience vertical game is with the right aspect ratio.

Its a lot harder to get on with an Arcade Monitor but the results are so much better, 100% authentic.
