Are you *sure* you are running with the latest drivers from ATI? I have the Rage Fury Pro 128 w/32 MB, and I was experiencing something very similar to you. (Although when I used 800x600 mode, the screen went completely black and stayed there)
Check ATI's web site, as they have just (within the past two weeks) put some new drivers there for these boards...
