I finally got around to hooking up my hot rod se, and I found out I suck at Robotron!!! :) (any pointers?)

Do most people use the arcade layout and use left joystick for move and right for fire, or do you switch them, I tried both was and I still found myself moving in the direction I want to fire, and not firing it the correct direction.
